Possible radiation leak at WIPP

CARLSBAD NM (KRQE) – Officials are saying there is no danger to human health or the environment as they investigate a possible radiation leak at the Waste Isolation Pilot Plant near Carlsbad.

An air monitor detected airborne radiation in the underground portion of the WIPP facility around 11PM Friday night.

Since then, officials have been conducting surface and air quality tests, but say so far tests have detected no contamination, and they are calling the leak “not significant”.

Workers at the site did not test positive for contamination.

The cause of the leak is not yet known; however, officers say they don’t believe this incident is related to a truck fire in the underground facility that suspended underground operations about a week and a half ago.

Members of New Mexico’s Congressional Delegation are also monitoring the situation.
