Officer says burglary suspect attacked him

ALBUQUERQUE (KRQE) – An Albuquerque police officer says he was attacked by another man inside an Albuquerque motel.

Juan Abeyta, 37, was spotted by an APD officer in a stolen vehicle the night of Jan. 11.

According to a criminal complaint, when the officer followed him into a Motel 6 on Pan American, Abeyta attacked the officer repeatedly and then escaped by jumping out of a third floor window.

Shortly after, police found Abeyta’s motel room filled with stolen loot connected to a string of recent auto and home burglaries across the city, and an auto theft case in the South Valley. Police traced the stolen items back to the victims.

Abeyta was arrested late last month in a separate case. He appeared in court charged in this case Saturday. provides commenting to allow for constructive discussion on the stories we cover.
