Serial drunk drivers may face bigger penalties

SANTA FE (KRQE ) – Serial drunk drivers may soon face longer prison time.

The House on Thursday passed a bill increasing penalties for fourth DWI convictions and any after that.

A fourth would mean a mandatory year and a half sentence which would be up from the current six months.

An eighth DWI conviction would mean at least 10 years in prison.

Forty-six people were convicted of their eighth or more DWI in 2012. provides commenting to allow for constructive discussion on the stories we cover.
