Police shooting leaves dog dead

LAS CRUCES (KRQE) – An officer-involved shooting in Las Cruces left one dog dead.

Las Cruces police say the officer, who was in plain clothes, was flagged down Wednesday evening by a man and two teenage girls who were being chased by the dog.

The detective radioed for help from animal control – but before help could arrive, the dog reportedly charged the detective who opened fire.

An internal investigation is underway which is required any time an officer discharges his gun.

The officer is a 16-year veteran of the force.
