Judges recuse fatal DWI trial

VALENCIA COUNTY, N.M. (KRQE) – It’s becoming difficult to find a judge to handle a deadly DWI case in Valencia County.

Daniel Sanchez was killed. His 11-year-old daughter, Magen, was seriously injured last month when the motorcycle they were on was struck by Jacob Williams, who investigators say was drunk.

Sanchez is the brother of District Court Judge William Sanchez.

Because all the other judges in the district worked closely with him, they’ve recused themselves.

So has the district attorney.

The case has been assigned to former Santa Fe District Attorney Henry Valdez for prosecution, but a judge has not been assigned.

Valdez says the Supreme Court will likely assign a new judge; they have another week to do so.
