ABQ police chief to be announced soon

ALBUQUERQUE (KRQE) – We could know as early as Friday who will be Albuquerque’s next police chief.

According to the mayor’s office, a national search firm prepared a short list of candidates and the top three were interviewed Thursday.

The first, Gorden Eden, is the current cabinet secretary of the New Mexico Department of Public Safety.

There’s also Thomas Lawrence, the Dallas police department’s assistant chief of police, and Craig Goralski, the assistant chief of police at the metro police department in Houston.

Whoever gets the top job will face the ongoing department of justice investigation.

The feds are looking into a pattern of officers using excessive force and getting into trouble, along with the overall culture at APD, all prompted by a wave of police shootings since 2010.

Interim Chief Allen Banks will leave at the end of the month to become chief in Round Rock, Texas.
