Judge may recuse herself from cases

ALBUQUERQUE (KRQE) – A New Mexico judge is considering recusing herself from several cases, after she stopped at the scene of an accident that involved defendants in her court.

District Court Judge Sheri Raphaelson and a court bailiff were driving from Española to court in Tierra Amarilla last Tuesday morning.

There was an overturned pickup that had skidded off the snowy highway.

The judge stopped to help a person who turned out to be a defendant due in her courtroom.

In court, the judge did not issue a warrant when the defendant failed to appear because she knew he was taken to the hospital.

Some of the people who helped during the accident were also defendants due in her courtroom.
