UNM turns to youth this season

ALBUQUERQUE (KRQE) – The Lobos baseball team is less than a week away from opening the 2014 season at San Diego on the 14th. This year, Head Coach Ray Birmingham will look to plug holes around the diamond left by 5 position players including All-Americans DJ Peterson, and Mitch Garver.

Junior Alex Real will take over the catching duties, a position where Garver produced a .390 batting average driving in 68 runs, and scoring 55 runs. The Lobos will also have to find away to replace power hitter DJ Peterson.

Peterson belted 18 home runs batting .408 for the Lobos with 72 RBI. UNM has 4 returning position players and starting pitcher Josh Walker. Walker went 11-1 on the mound in a season where the Lobos won 37 games and finished first in the mountain west with a 25-5 conference record.
