High bond set for man accused of raping baby

ALBUQUERQUE (KRQE) – Extra security stood close-by as the man accused of raping and abusing his girlfriends’ four month-old daughter faced a judge today.

Police say the infant’s condition has not improved overnight she remains on life support.

Nineteen year old Elijah Fernandez is charged with child rape and child abuse after police say a four-month-old in his care stopped breathing.

APD says there were bruises on the baby’s face, brain injury, and evidence of sexual assault.

Police say Fernandez initially claimed the baby fell off a bed but then told detectives he hit the baby twice claiming he was stressed and her crying woke him up.

CYFD says the family was referred to them three times, but none of the cases referred to child abuse and the state agency never knew Fernandez to be one of the baby’s caregiver.

Sunday he was quiet and stood with his head down the majority of his time in court. Court investigators then asked the judge for a high cash only bond.

The judge set Fernandez’ bond at 100-thousand dollars cash only.

According to a criminal complaint the mother claims she was a relatives’ home during the time of the abuse.

Detectives are questioning everyone who was at the home to determine their involvement if any
