County number sends callers to sexy chat line

SANTA FE (KRQE) – Call one New Mexico county’s phone number and you won’t get a receptionist at the office.

Instead, you’ll be directed to a raunchy chat line.

Officials have been on the phone all day, trying to figure out how and when this sexy chat service seems to have taken over the county’s phone line.

“Welcome to America’s hottest talk line,” a recorded voice greets callers.

Santa Fe County’s 1-800 number that it said it has been using for at least the last six years, now takes callers to a raunchy chat line.

“Ladies, to talk to interesting and exciting guys free, press one now. Guys, hot ladies are waiting to talk to you, press two to connect free now,” the message says.

“Our staff has been working diligently all day long to try and figure out what happened and how we can correct it,” said Kristine Mihelcic, a Santa Fe County spokesperson.

Mihelcic said the county had a 1-800 number for anyone trying to reach its offices long-distance.

An online search of the number links you to the county website, but click on the link and you’ll see the number’s been removed.

“I immediately, when it was brought to our attention, verified that the number was not going to our 1-800 line and then pulled it from our website immediately,” Mihelcic said.

After lots of phone calls Friday, the county said it believes its number was sold to a wholesale company. But when and how? No one is quite sure.

Maybe the strangest part is that Mihelcic said some calls are still going through to the county on the 1-800 line.

“It is really unfortunate that this happened, but we’re very thankful it was brought to light and we could address it immediately,” Mihelcic said.

This has happened before. Santa Fe County spoke with the city of Concord in California that said this same hotline took over its 1-800 number after someone with the city apparently stopped paying the bills for the number.

Anyone trying to contact Santa Fe County offices, should call their main line at 505-986-6200. provides commenting to allow for constructive discussion on the stories we cover.
