9-year-old death prompts bill proposal

SANTA FE (KRQE) – Several state lawmakers Thursday introduced a bill they call Omaree’s law.

“If our bill had been in law, Omaree would have been taken into state custody,” said Rep. Stephanie Garcia Richard, D-Los Alamos.

The bill would require CYFD to take immediate custody of any child who shows signs of abuse like bruises, burns and bite marks.

The parents would be entitled to a hearing within 48 hours.

The bill goes first to the House judiciary committee.
