Roundhouse gun ban bill shut down

SANTA FE (KRQE) – A lawmaker’s attempt to ban guns from the state Senate was shot down Wednesday.

Santa Fe Democrat Peter Wirth’s proposal would’ve banned lawmakers and everyone else but police officers from carrying guns in the Senate chambers or committee rooms.

Wirth says allowing firearms inside the Senate creates uncomfortable situations. Opponents argue it makes the building safer.

“I’ve talked to people that have been here longer than I have, and they can’t recall a specific incident where there was an inappropriate display or use of a firearm by a citizen,” said Mike Sindelar of the New Mexico Sheriff’s Associaton. “I would submit that’s in part because we do allow firearms.” provides commenting to allow for constructive discussion on the stories we cover.
