Razor blades on carts cause close calls

ROSWELL, N.M. (KRQE) – Roswell police are investigating two scary incidents at the local Walmart.

They say two people have been hurt by razor blades attached to the store’s shopping carts.

They haven’t caught whoever is doing it.

What’s usually a routine visit to the local grocery store, now has some Roswell residents on edge.

“It’s scary. it’s not something you normally think about. You just grab a cart and go,” said Chuck Greenhouse.

Roswell police say a Walmart customer found a razor blade attached to one of the store’s shopping cart handles Tuesday.

According to a police report, the customer was grabbing for the cart and noticed a sharp object connected to the handle.

“Thinking about having kids, my kids push the shopping carts sometimes and that would be very scary and very upsetting, especially having my little ones get cut,” said Sandra Macies.

As scary as it is for shoppers, officials say this isn’t the first incident at the store.

On Jan. 6, an elderly woman was cut by a razor that had been taped onto another cart handle.

“A person that would attach a razor blade to a handle has got to be a little sick,” said Greenhouse.

Shannon Runyon, another Walmart shopper, said, “It’s really disheartening to think that somebody would do anything to hurt the people of Roswell.”

Walmart managers say they’re investigating the incident thoroughly, but shoppers say they’re still concerned about their safety.

“Wish everything was safe everywhere you go. You just never know,” said Macies. “You never know what you come up to.”

Runyon agrees. “It’s really sad. Really sad.”

Roswell police are investigating to see if the two incidents are related.
