Visits to NM preserve drop by 11 percent

JEMEZ SPRINGS, N.M. (KRQE) – Not as many people visited the Valles Caldera National Preserve in 2013.

Officials believe one reason behind the 11 percent drop is a closure of the preserve last summer, during the Thompson Ridge Fire.

There is a push to allow the public more access to the preserve.

In its report to Congress, the preserve quotes challenges with that idea saying right now they have insufficient parking, picnic sites and other infrastructure.
