Cops suspended for lack of abuse report

ALBUQUERQUE (KRQE) – There’s new fallout in the case of 9-year-old Omaree Varela.

Police say the boy was kicked to death in December by his mother, Synthia Varela Casaus, at their Albuquerque home.

On Tuesday, the city announced two police officers were put on paid leave for a 911 call Omaree made six months before his death. During that call, two adults curse at and threaten the young boy.

The officers never filed a police report. The city has directed APD to launch an internal investigation to find out why.

The mayor’s office says if the officers involved did not respond properly, they will be held accountable.
