Info released on ex-judge arrest

CHAPARRAL, N.M. (KRQE) – KRQE News 13 has learned Anthony Cobos, a former El Paso County judge, had been renting out his deceased stepmother’s home in Chaparral for several years.

Authorities say the couple renting the property was recently given notice that the home was in foreclosure and they would have to move out.

Cobos allegedly stopped using the rent payments to pay the mortgage back in November 2012.

Authorities say between that time and the eviction notice, the couple had given Cobos more than $43,000 in rent and other fees.

Cobos was arrested Friday in El Paso and is being held in the Doña Ana County Detention Center.

That arrest came less than two weeks before he was scheduled to turn himself in to start serving a four-year federal prison sentence in a public corruption case in Texas.
