Gymnastics coach arrested due to girl’s complaint

ALBUQUERQUE (KRQE) – A gymnastics coach is in jail, accused of inappropriately touching one of his young students during practice.

Russell “Rusty” Glanton, a coach at ABQ Tumbling and Trampoline, or ABQ TNT, was arrested on one charge of criminal sexual contact with a minor earlier this week. On Thursday, his bond was set at $10,000 cash.

According to a criminal complaint, a young girl recently came forward claiming that Glanton, 48, would touch her privates during practice.

The girl told police Glanton would put his hands up her shorts during stretches. She described feeling violated, but said she was afraid she’d get in trouble if she told anyone. Instead, the girl would intentionally fall and pretend to be hurt so Glanton wouldn’t touch her, according to the criminal complaint.

When police questioned Glanton, he said it was possible that his hand had gone under the young girl’s shorts, but he described it as spotting, and said it wasn’t sexual.

“Detectives interviewed him and while he denied these claims, his statements were just not consistent with the accusations and allegations and explanation for what this little girl went through,” said officer Tasia Martinez with APD.

According to police, the alleged victim named five others she thought had been touched in the same manner by Glanton. Now police are looking into that information, and have set up a phone tip line specifically for the case at 505-659-6686.
