Classes resume after shooting rumors

RIO RANCHO, N.M. (KRQE) – Classes were in session at a Rio Rancho Middle School Thursday following rumors of a school shooting.

The rumor spread so quickly that automatic calls had to go out to parents Wednesday night to calm their fears.

It started with a text message that was sent to several students at Lincoln middle school saying they could expect a “surprise today.”

According to Rio Rancho police, students started speculating about what that surprise might be sparking rumors of a shooting.

Police say the kid who sent the text is a former student who was coming back to visit and surprise friends. provides commenting to allow for constructive discussion on the stories we cover.
