ALBUQUERQUE (KRQE) – Residents did a great job saving water so now their rates are going up in Albuquerque.
The water authority has not determined yet how much more water bills will go up, but the price hike could begin as soon as July.
Officials say the increase is necessary in helping with the department’s growing revenue shortfall. That’s because more customers conserved water than they had anticipated.
They say they expected a 2 percent drop in usage between 2012 and 2013, but they actually saw an 18 percent dip.
Plus, the late summer rain arrived at a time when water usage is typically at its highest.
Officials say the revenue shortfall means some projects will be delayed, including the renovation of the southside sewage treatment plant.
