Sheriff cleared of ethics violations

BERNALILLO COUNTY, N.M. (KRQE) – The Bernalillo County Code of Conduct Board unanimously cleared Sheriff Dan Houston of ethics violations.

A man named Travis Ogle filed a citizen’s complaint claiming Houston used county employees, phones and computers for his re-election campaign.

The sheriff flatly denied doing anything improper:

“I came into the office of the sheriff having never been found guilty of anything. EOC, internal affairs, nothing. And you don’t have a record like that without dotting your i’s and crossing your t’s,” Houston said.

Houston’s attorney said the allegation was hearsay and a political smear. After the hearing the board went behind closed doors, then came out and cleared the sheriff. provides commenting to allow for constructive discussion on the stories we cover.
