‘Senior prank’ considered vandalism

RIO RANCHO (KRQE) – Pulling off a senior prank is a tradition, but sometimes students go too far.

Some unsuspecting students parked in the lot at Rio Rancho High School on Tuesday became the target of what the district is calling vandalism. Students say it was just a senior prank.

Rio Rancho Public Schools said five seniors worked together to remove 76 license plates off cars in the student lot and used them to spell out 2014 on campus.

Rio Rancho Police said a school resource officer did interviews to identify the culprits and took down a report, leaving the punishment up to the school district.

The school district said it cannot discuss specific consequences for specific students, but punishment for a first-time vandalism offense could range from a few days of suspension to police referral.

As for all those license plates, they say the high school’s security staff got them back to their rightful owners by the end of the school day.
