Groups rally at Roundhouse over licenses

SANTA FE (KRQE) – The annual fight over repealing the law issuing driver’s licenses to illegal immigrants came to a head again in the capitol Wednesday.

Immigrants rights groups rallied outside the roundhouse, pushing back against Gov. Susana Martinez’s fifth try for a license repeal.

Martinez has said giving licenses to illegal immigrants prompts fraud.

Immigrant groups argue it’s an unfair attack on their rights and not what lawmakers should be focused on.

“Workers and their families should not have to worry about the state taking away their driver’s licenses,” said Marina Pina of Somos un Pueblo Unido.

A bill introduced by Republican Paul Pacheco would create two kinds of licenses. One could be used for ID at the airport or for entering federal buildings. The other would only be issued to so-called “dreamers,” undocumented immigrants brought to the U.S. as children. provides commenting to allow for constructive discussion on the stories we cover.
