Former inmate sues Corrections Dept.

ALBUQUERQUE (KRQE) – A former death row inmate is suing the corrections department claiming they failed to protect him.

Michael Guzman was convicted of kidnapping two UNM students in 1981. He is accused of raping and killing one of them, 19-year-old Julie Jackson and trying to kill Colene Bush, stabbing her 33 times.

Now Guzman claims guards put him with “known enemies” in prison and as a result he was badly beaten by fellow inmates and nearly died.

The lawsuit seeks unspecified damages and cost for medical bills.

The corrections department denies the allegations.

Guzman’s life sentence was commuted by Governor Tony Anaya. provides commenting to allow for constructive discussion on the stories we cover.
