Lobos conquer Utah State on the road

ALBUQUERQUE (KRQE) – Craig Neal’s UNM Lobos will return home with a road sweep after defeating Utah State on Tuesday night 78-65.

The Lobos managed to win even with starting center Alex Kirk on the bench. Kirk missed a second straight game nursing a left leg injury.

Freshman Obij Aget played in Kirk’s place and scored 7 points with 4 rebounds before fouling out. Lobos guard Hugh Greenwood took up the rest of the slack on the glass.

Greenwood had a team high 10 rebounds to go with 5 points.

Senior forward Cameron Bairstow led the Lobos in scoring with 22 points. He also pulled down six rebounds.

The Lobos and Utah State traded 3-point shots in the first half with the Lobos knocking down 6 of 9 for a 41 to 33 advantage at the break. Utah State rallied in the second half to trim the Lobos lead to two points. That would be as close as they would get.

Reigning Mountain West Player of the Year Kendall Williams scored 16 points in the win. Freshman guard Cullen Neal had 13 points off the bench while junior guard Deshawn Delaney scored 12.

With the win, the Lobos remain undefeated on the road in the Mountain West and improve to 7-1. The Lobos are 16-4 overall after handing Utah State their fourth straight conference loss. Utah State is now 2-6 in conference play.

The Lobos will return home to play three of their next four games. They will host San Jose State on Saturday.
