More than a dozen drivers did what they could to stop a wrong-way driver on the interstate in the middle of the night.
Calls came in to 911 dispatch on Dec. 18 from people on I-25 in Santa Fe near St. Francis Drive. Police say the out-of-control drunk driver was Joe Salazar.
Witnesses say he dodged a lot of cars, but it wasn’t long before his and others’ luck ran out. Salazar ended up hitting a truck head on.
Two men and a woman inside were taken to the hospital, but were not seriously hurt. Salazar suffered much more serious injuries.
Police found an open bottle of vodka in his car and say he blew a .21, nearly three times the legal limit.
Salazar is now charged with three counts of aggravated DWI resulting in great bodily harm. He does have a history of drunk driving.
