High-speed chase ends in crash, officer injured

CORRALES, N.M. (KRQE) – A police officer is in critical condition after a car crash Tuesday morning.

He was trying to stop a speeding driver in a stolen car in Corrales.

This all happened just after 5 o’clock Tuesday morning when Officer Jeremy Romero started to follow the driver who reached speeds of more than 100 miles an hour, through the village.

Both vehicles crashed on the 5600 block of Corrales Road.

The suspect fled on foot and Officer Romero was airlifted to the hospital.

”Officer Romero was transported to UNMH with serious injuries with serious injuries and I do not know the extent of those injuries at this time,” Captain Victor Mangiacapra said.

The latest word is that Officer Romero is critical but stable. He’s been an officer for 13 years.

The suspect has not been caught.

When police ran the license plates, they learned the vehicle the suspect was driving was stolen. They say it was taken out of Albuquerque.
